Building design community

Ligatures

  • I was asked to put together a look and feel for this virtual community series that would intrigue designers from across Amazon, and encourage employee engagement.

The Challenge

A few months into the 2020 global pandemic, design and engineering teams at Amazon were experiencing challenges in communication, and disconnection due to the shift to remote working. Many organizations were experiencing the same challenges in this new working model.

In response, this series was developed as a virtual roundtable for the Amazon design community around the world. Titled “Ligatures: Connecting through Design” which as broadcasted live to the Amazon design community around the world. Broadcast each quarter, featuring a collection of guests from design, business, and engineering leaders to discuss how they collaborate, innovate, and partner to move their business’s forward.

Ligature

1. Noun—A thing used for tying or binding something tightly.
2. Typography—A character consisting of two or more joined letters, e.g. æ, fl, fi.

Below are artifacts for the design system for this series, that brought it to life in a simple and repeatable way.

This looping animation welcomed the global audience, and acted as a virtual waiting room before the broadcast began.

Results

The series helped to build connection, and transparency for the Amazon design community and provide regular opportunities for design leaders to address concerns and challenges that teams across the company were facing while navigating this new working model and communication landscape.

Most importantly, the title sequence for the series was beloved by pets everywhere.
